Common sense, but not common practice – The Sunday Snippet – [4.22.12]

Dale Carnegie

How to Win Friends and Influence People was first published in 1936. It became an overnight sensation and has since taken its place in publishing history as one of the most successful bestsellers of all time. Approximately 30 million copies have been sold.

Smile. Be genuinely interested in other people. Show respect for other people’s opinions – all simple ideas that, put together, help “win friends and influence people.” If you haven’t had a chance to read or revisit the book lately, Carnegie lays out Six Ways to Make People Like You. They are:

  1. Become genuinely interested in other people.
  2. Smile.
  3. Remember that a person’s name is the sweetest, most important sound to anyone.
  4. Encourage others to talk about themselves.
  5. Talk in terms of the other person’s interests.
  6. Make the other person feel important – and do it sincerely.

CBS Sunday Morning did a story recently on the evolution of the book and the Carnegie company. Click here to see the HD video of the Sunday Morning segment.
