When you think about it, most stories can be classified into one of five common story types. My friend and resident story professor, Andrew Nemiccolo, has created an easy way to remember these story types.
Andrew came up with the Five F’s to facilitate StoryMining with his clients. Thinking about these kinds of situations can help uncover good stories to write or share. The Five F’s are:
Flow – situations in which you were “in the zone.
Failures – when you or your company faltered. How did you recover?
Forks – forks in the road. Key decision points in a client relationship.
Funny – humor, especially the self-deprecating kind, humanizes your brand.
Future – a vision of the future that ties to the past. How is your organization helping a client to reach their goals?
If you’re having trouble getting started on the best stories to use for your organization, just run down the list above and one or two great stories will come to you shortly.
