Really good growth advice

Kelly Scanlon and the nice folks at Thinking Bigger Business Media brought Mike Michalowicz, author of “The Pumpkin Plan,” to town this past week as part of their speaker series and it was extremely entertaining, educational and motivational.

Though the title is a funny one, once you learn about the connections he makes between growing a colossal pumpkin and growing a successful business, you’ll become a fast fan of this simple strategy.

So what is the Pumpkin Plan?

Plant the right seeds:  Do only those things you do best, as measured by passion, market needs, and scalability. And stick to them.

Nurture the strong pumpkins:  Put all your energy and efforts into your best customers. He has a quick and easy rank/order system that can help you figure out which customers are your best.

Take care of the root system:  This may be the best advice of all. Instead of asking clients for general referrals, just ask to meet their other good vendors. Your client will quickly introduce you to them especially since it may help you all serve his needs better.

I haven’t done it justice with the few points above, but there are many more good ideas in the book and it’s definitely worth the read.

No time to read it, you say? In that case, I’d highly recommend you consider joining my friend and Kansas City business coach Shawn Kinkade this Thurs., Nov. 1 for his Book Review Series.

Shawn will be going over many more details of “The Pumpkin Plan” and passing along his wise perspective as well. Click here to find out more about Shawn’s Book Review Series.
