The above is the enticing preface from “A Christmas Carol”, Charles Dickens’ timeless novella on avarice, hope, and redemption.
It’s a universal, amusing and touching story that holds dozens of lessons. Here are three for those of us that aspire to be the reformed and kindly Scrooge:
- Heed words of caution. Scrooge is first visited in the story by the ghost of his dead business partner, Jacob Marley. Jacob is doomed to walk the earth, trying to make amends for his sins against mankind. “The common welfare should have been my business,” moans Marley. We can learn from the success, as well as the misdeeds of others.
- Treat team members well. Scrooge tormented his poor clerk, Bob Cratchit, to no end. Bob was loyal, hardworking and trustworthy and Scrooge took him for granted. Our teams are our growth engines. When we show them kindness, respect, and recognition, we motivate even higher levels of performance and everyone benefits.
- Give back. When fundraisers for the poor visit Scrooge, he coldly asks “Are there no prisons, are there no workhouses?” It’s well-documented that when you share time, talent and treasure, it not only feels good and does good, but it often begets more success.
Happy holidays and best wishes for a successful 2015.
Have a great week with friends and family.
