Setting yourself up for success in 2016 means starting with the right outlook and attitude. A positive and plentiful approach is the best way to begin.
A Scarcity Mentality is a common trap that keeps us from achieving goals. It’s easy, and natural, to feel like we never have enough of our essential resources – love, time, money, and success, in general. It causes stress, it damages relationships, and it saps strength. Worrying about what we don’t have keeps us from actually enjoying what we do have.
The Abundance Mentality, on the other hand, is the paradigm that there is plenty out there and enough to spare for everybody. It results in the sharing of prestige, recognition, profits and decision-making.
So how do you think and act with a more abundant attitude? Authors John C. Maxwell and Stephen F. Covey have covered Scarcity and Abundance numerous times in their writings and lectures. Here are their ideas on how to cultivate the abundance mentality, personally and professionally:
Offer words of appreciation. Let people know how much you value their contributions. Your influence and happiness will increase in direct proportion to the appreciation that you show.
Choose to see opportunity. The next time you’re faced with an obstacle, flip it around and consider it an opportunity. Face the challenge with optimism and make sure others see you modeling that attitude.
Remind yourself that there is more than enough. As Covey said, there is enough pie to go around, so break that nasty habit of comparing yourself to others. There is plenty for everyone.
Carefully select the company you keep. Mindsets are contagious. Limit your time with “the-glass-is-half- empty” people.
Spend time in grateful reflection. Gratitude is a powerful aspect of an abundant mindset. In his book, Life, the Truth, and Being Free, coach and speaker Steve Maraboli says, “Those with a grateful mindset tend to see the message in the mess. And even though life may knock them down, the grateful find reasons, if even small ones, to get up.”
Give more of what you want. One of the best ways to increase your abundance is to give. Don’t feel like you have enough time? Donate your time for someone in need. Don’t feel like you have enough money? Give to someone less fortunate.
Assess your outlook. Adjust as needed. And let your mindset be your biggest asset for 2016!
