Things go wrong every day.
And none of us can escape them, no matter how good we are at risk management, strategic planning or self-discipline.
People quit. Clients leave. Presentations bomb.
Most are simple jabs that just hurt a little. While others are major body blows that can bring you to your knees.
Here are four ideas to help you get up and keep going:
- Acknowledge the pain.Difficulties make us stronger, smarter and more durable the next time around. I’m reminded of a favorite Bible verse from James: “Dear Brothers and Sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.”
- Maintain your humanity – and good humor. Don’t be bitter, hard or selfish. Gain wisdom and learn to be more empathetic towards others. A good sense of humor keeps you humble and more realistic.
- A quick recovery is important. Get back in the game. Don’t give up on the mission.
- Get energized and enthused. There’s too much that needs to get done. There are big wins ahead so there’s no time for self-pity.
Playing it safe is not a winning game plan.
President Nixon – for all his faults – had this much right: “If you take no risks, you will suffer no defeats. But if you take no risks, you win no victories.”
Take the right risks. Expect some defeats. And get good at picking yourself up.
Have a great week.
