What’s your type? – The Sunday Snippet [8.28.11]

Most of us will never attain the design brilliance of Steve Jobs, but his passion and pursuit of great design is a valuable lesson to remember. I can’t speak specifically to consumer electronic product design, but I do spend a lot of time studying graphic design – not only for our clients, but for our own materials and presentations.

Graphic design is important and it pays to be thoughtful about your logo and corporate identity materials. It’s really one of the first impressions you make on someone meeting you and your business for the first time.

A fundamental building block of graphic design is type. In fact, it may be as much as 95% of good design. There are thousands of fonts available and there are companies that do nothing but design and consult on typefaces. It’s a niche specialty and a fun one to know a little about.

Fonts convey ideas and move people in different ways. They connote a wide range of attributes including action, gravitas, playfulness, fanciness, and warmth. When used appropriately they enhance clarity, purpose and overall brand equity.

Take a look at your materials, or better yet, have a graphic designer do so and ask for recommendations on freshening up materials that may be long in the tooth. If you need a graphic designer, simply reply back to this email and I’ll put you in touch with one.
