I can complain with the best of them. I’m really good at finding fault and calling it out.
But, oh, is it costly. The energy and resources I’ve consumed by complaining have no doubt cost me happiness and success over the years.
Moreover, it distracts and takes away from more important functions like learning and leading.
Jon Gordon, positive leadership expert and author of “The No Complaining Rule” reminds us we have the power to change beliefs and actions on our own. When we break free of complaining, we can break through to solutions.
Here are Gordon’s five key ways to break out of the complaining rut:
1. Practice Gratitude. It’s physiologically impossible to be stressed and thankful at the same time. Energize and engage others by letting them know you are grateful for them and their work.
2. Praise Others. Focus on what people are doing right, not what they are doing wrong. Point out mistakes when necessary, but give three times as much praise as criticism.
3. Focus on Success. At the end of a day, think about a successful moment of that day. Success promotes more success and positive thinking. Do it and expect it.
4. Let Go. Stop replaying the past. Focus on the promise of the future.
5. Pray. Prayer reduces stress; boosts positive energy; and promotes health, vitality, and longevity. Look around and give thanks.
Complaining is a dead end that saps strength and sabotages morale.
Focus on the positive to find the conviction and confidence to take on everyday challenges – and quit complaining.
Have a great week.
