Legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden won 10 NCAA National Championships in a 12 year period, including an unprecedented seven in a row.
Wooden was a gentleman, an inspiring leader, and a scholar on the subject of coaching. It’s no surprise that has also become one of the one most quotable sources on motivation and leadership.
On this eve of the NCAA basketball championship game, it seems fitting to revisit 10 of Coach Wooden’s best sayings and writings:
- “Whatever you do in life, surround yourself with smart people who’ll argue with you.”
- “Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.”
- “Success is never final, failure is never fatal. It’s courage that counts.”
- “Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.”
- “Don’t let making a living prevent you from making a life.”
- “Be quick, but don’t hurry.”
- “Talent is God given. Be humble. Fame is man-given. Be grateful. Conceit is self-given. Be careful.”
- “Happiness begins where selfishness ends.”
- “You are not a failure until you start blaming others for your mistakes”
- “Listen if you want to be heard.”
Have a great week.
