We like to highlight authors and their books in this weekly note, but it’s impossible to include all their best points in this small space, so we’ve created the Brilliant Books Series.
The idea is to share more great parts of Brilliant Brooks we like, still in bite size pieces but we string them together in consecutive weeks. It’s a little like a book club, except we do the reading and interpretation for you.
One of my all-time favorite business books is “Rework” by Jason Fried, founder and CEO of Basecamp, a company that designs and builds project management and collaboration software. Fried has created a large and loyal following for his software as well as his writing and speaking. He tells it like it is and keeps things simple. He published “Rework” in 2010 but the ideas are timeless. “Rework” is essentially a collection of about 50 short articles on different topics.
In his chapter on Progress, Fried writes about how Decisions are Progress:
Whenever you can, swap “Let’s think about it” for “Let’s decide on it.” Commit to making decisions. Don’t wait for the perfect solution. Decide and move forward.
You want to get into the rhythm of making choices. When you get in that flow of making decision after decision, you build momentum and boost morale. Decisions are progress. Each one you make is a brick in your foundation.
You can’t build on top of “We’ll decide later,” but you can build on top of “Done.”
The problem comes when you postpone decisions in the hope that a perfect answer will come to you later. It won’t. You’re as likely to make a great call today as you are tomorrow.
Brilliant Book Bit: Doing something well, or good enough, in the short-term is much better than creating a perfect solution that takes too long, or worse, doesn’t get done at all.
Fried is so good at rethinking work. If you’d like to see Fried in action, here’s his TED Talk. Stay tuned for more good ideas from Fried in the coming weeks and let me know what you think about this series. Interesting? Useful?
And let me know if you have a favorite book you think we should feature.
Kindest regards,
