There are two primary elements which are needed to institute a new idea, new policy, new product, or any new endeavor that you undertake. The two key ingredients are structure and strokes.
In his book Say It Straight, Abe Wagner points out that Weight Watchers is a wonderful example of a successful program that meets these two very basic human needs. The structure aspect of Weight Watchers includes recipes, weighing food, and weighing-in. The strokes occur when someone weighs in, they announce their achievement, and receive praise – ‘Gosh, you look great!’
How can this simple concept be useful in business (or at home?) Good ideas will live if you give them structure and strokes. ‘That’s a good idea, Mike. What kind of help do you need? What’s a reasonable timetable? When can we meet on this again for a progress report?’
To accomplish goals, especially long-term goals, structure and strokes are absolute necessities. When clearly defined, the activities and periodic reinforcement from others will motivate and inspire progress and accomplishment. Stick to this simple formula and watch the results roll in.
