Thinking outside your industry – The Sunday Snippet [2.12.12]

Game-changing ideas and innovations in an industry often come from the most unlikely sources – beginners, outsiders, and even other fields of study.

“Think outside the box” has been a popular catch phrase for a long time and has helped drive creative change to be sure, but it may not be enough these days. In order to really move the needle, you need to “think outside your industry.”

Netflix and iTunes weren’t started by brick-and-mortar movie rental stores or traditional record labels. Those ideas came from smart business people who had little or no experience in those markets.

Other cross-industry idea sharing and applications include surgical checklists (from pilots), wine ratings (using historical weather data), and baseball scouting (Moneyball with Brad Pitt.) And how do you think Kramer from Seinfeld came up with rubber liners in tankers to prevent oil spills?

Expand your thinking, open your mind, and gain a new perspective. It’s the best way to spark creative juices and find your next big idea.
